breaking bread | 2024 – ongoing

Breaking Bread is an ongoing, experimental body of work made up of a series of picture frames that are moulded from ornate, gilded frames typically found in Western art museums. The difference is, these frames are created entirely out of bread. Originally used to frame portraits of beloved family members, as well as their handwritten recipes, the replicas of these frames have been named after the person whose portrait they originally housed. These are ephemeral works, subject to the decaying effects of time and air on the baked dough. Unlike their historical counterparts, they are not built to last centuries. They are made to be savoured in shared meals, in beloved moments of communion and gathering. Whether or not you choose to eat them, these works will disintegrate. Breaking Bread offers a moment of pause, a meditation on decolonial modes of aesthesis, resistance, and existence beyond Western aesthetics and the promise of eternal legacy. May you be present to the moment, however you choose to break this bread.
