far filo’ | 2024

From the Italian Bresciano dialect, the phrase far filo’ literally translates to ‘do threads’. It is an old phrase used to describe the gathering of women who sat together, knitting and communing over their lives. Following this type of gathering that centres around slow manual labour, Far Filo’ became an intervention, a creative gathering inside the exhibition-made-home that was Things I Found Nelle Viscere (2024). Seated inside the living room of Mending God The Mother (2024), visitors were invited to bring along their creative projects, have some tea and coffee, and sit-with the artist nelle viscere (the gut) whilst they do filo’. Performed across South Africa and Italy, Far Filo’ is the start of an ongoing collective, trans-national praxis that looks to embody a more decolonial aesthesis.
